Encountering Low-Hydrogen Silicone Oil

I. What is Low-Hydrogen Silicone Oil?

Low-hydrogen silicone oil is a type of silicone oil relative to high-hydrogen silicone oil. It contains less reactive silicon-hydrogen bonds and is commonly used in the preparation of modified silicone oils and addition-cure silicone rubbers, such as polyether-modified silicone oils and alkyl-modified silicone oils.

Low-hydrogen silicone oil is typically a colorless, transparent liquid, non-corrosive, flammable, insoluble in water, but readily soluble in organic solvents.640 (8)(1).png

II. Characteristics of Low-Hydrogen Silicone Oil Products

Moderate crosslinking density: Low-hydrogen silicone oil can undergo both crosslinking and chain extension reactions during the vulcanization of silicone rubber, improving the toughness and elongation of the silicone.

Good reactivity: Under the action of a catalyst, low-hydrogen silicone oil can react with various groups to synthesize modified silicone oils with specific properties.

Wide applicability: Low-hydrogen silicone oil can be used not only in the preparation and modification of silicone rubber but also in the production of foam stabilizers, defoamers, and water-soluble silicone oils.

Safety in Use: It is colorless, highly transparent, non-toxic, odorless, safe, and environmentally friendly.

Good Physical and Chemical Properties: Low-hydrogen silicone oil has wide applications in many fields, such as the electromechanical industry, petroleum, chemical industry, medical treatment, pharmaceutical industry, food industry, textiles, printing and dyeing plants, and papermaking industry.

III. Applications of Low-Hydrogen Silicone Oil

Low-hydrogen silicone oil has various applications, mainly including the following:

Active Groups: Low-hydrogen silicone oil contains active groups that, under the action of a catalyst, can react with double bonds, hydroxyl groups, and other groups, thus participating in chemical reaction processes.

Crosslinking Agent: Low-hydrogen silicone oil can be used as a crosslinking agent for addition-type liquid silicone rubber (LSR). Under the catalysis of PT, it forms Si-C bonds, which helps in the crosslinking structure of silicone rubber and improves its performance.

Insulation Function: In the surface treatment of electrical-grade MgO, low-hydrogen silicone oil can act as an insulation agent, helping to improve the insulation performance of materials and protect the safe operation of electrical equipment.

Hand Feeling Agent and Lubricant: In the textile and apparel industry, low-hydrogen silicone oil is often used as a softener, water repellent, and hand feel improver, giving fabrics a soft hand feel and increasing their waterproof performance. It can also be used as a lubricant for sewing threads, a lubricant for chemical fiber spinnerets, and an auxiliary agent for garment lining, improving garment quality and processing performance.

IV. Packaging and Storage

Whether high- or low-hydrogen-content silicone oil, contact with alkaline substances should be avoided during packaging and storage. It should be protected from acids and moisture, and stored in a cool, dry place. Proper packaging and storage are crucial for ensuring the quality and performance of hydrogen-containing silicone oils.

Hydrogen-containing silicone oils, as a class of organosilicon compounds with special properties, play an important role in various fields such as textiles, construction, silicone rubber, and cosmetics. By gaining a deeper understanding of their molecular structure, product characteristics, and application areas, we can better utilize the advantages of hydrogen-containing silicone oils and provide strong support for the development of various industries.
