Introduction to Liquid Silicone Rubber Material Characteristics and Molding Processing

Mar 10, 2025

Liquid silicone rubber (LSR) is a high-performance elastomeric material with excellent heat resistance, weather resistance, elasticity and biocompatibility. It is widely used in medical, automotive, electronics, food and other fields. Its unique properties make it an ideal choice for many high-demand application scenarios.

Material properties

Heat resistance: Liquid silicone rubber can maintain stable performance in the temperature range of -50°C to 250°C, and can even withstand higher temperatures in the short term, making it suitable for use in high-temperature environments.

Weather resistance: It has strong resistance to ultraviolet rays, ozone and climate change, is not easy to age, and is suitable for long-term outdoor use.

Elasticity and flexibility: It has excellent elasticity and resilience, can quickly return to its original shape after deformation, and is suitable for manufacturing seals and shock-absorbing components.

Biocompatibility: It is non-toxic, odorless, meets medical and food-grade standards, and is widely used in medical devices and food contact materials.

Electrical insulation: It has good electrical insulation properties and is suitable for packaging and insulation protection of electronic components.

Chemical stability: It has strong resistance to chemicals such as acids, alkalis, and solvents, and is suitable for use in corrosive environments.

Molding Processing
The molding process of liquid silicone rubber is mainly completed through the injection molding process, which is characterized by high efficiency and high precision. The main steps are as follows:

Raw material preparation: Liquid silicone rubber is usually composed of component A (base rubber) and component B (curing agent), which need to be mixed evenly in proportion before use.

Injection molding: The mixed liquid silicone rubber is injected into the mold through a special injection molding machine. The injection molding machine is usually equipped with a metering pump and a static mixer to ensure that the material is mixed evenly and the injection amount is accurately controlled.

Heating and curing: The mold is heated to a certain temperature (usually 120°C to 200°C), and the liquid silicone rubber is quickly cured and formed in the mold, and the curing time is usually a few seconds to a few minutes.

Demolding and post-processing: After curing is completed, open the mold and take out the molded part. Due to the excellent demolding performance of liquid silicone rubber, a release agent is usually not required. The molded part may require post-processing such as trimming, cleaning or secondary vulcanization.

Application fields

Medical industry: used to manufacture medical catheters, seals, artificial organs, etc., due to its biocompatibility and high temperature disinfection resistance.

Automotive industry: used to manufacture seals, shock pads, cable sheaths, etc., with excellent high temperature and weather resistance.

Electronic industry: used for packaging and insulation protection of electronic components, with excellent electrical insulation performance.

Food industry: used to manufacture food-grade seals, pacifiers, etc., safe and non-toxic.

Consumer goods industry: used to manufacture baby products, kitchen utensils, etc., with excellent flexibility and durability.

Liquid silicone rubber has become an important material in the field of high-end manufacturing due to its excellent heat resistance, weather resistance, elasticity and biocompatibility. Its injection molding process is efficient and precise, and can meet the manufacturing needs of complex parts. With the advancement of technology, the application prospects of liquid silicone rubber in medical, automotive, electronics and other fields will be broader.
