Silicone oils and silicone oil emulsions

Feb 27, 2025

Silicone oil and silicone emulsion are two different forms of silicon compounds, and the main differences are physical form, composition and application fields.

1. Physical form
Silicone oil: It is a colorless and transparent oily liquid at room temperature, with a wide range of viscosity, from low viscosity to high viscosity.

Silicone emulsion: The water-in-oil (O/W) or oil-in-water (W/O) emulsion formed by emulsification of silicone oil, usually has a milky white appearance.

2. Composition
Silicone oil: The main component is polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), and its molecular weight determines its viscosity.

Silicone emulsion: It is composed of silicone oil, emulsifier and water. The emulsifier helps silicone oil disperse in water to form a stable emulsion.

3. Stability
Silicone oil: It has stable chemical properties, is resistant to high temperature and oxidation, and is not easy to decompose.

Silicone emulsion: It has poor stability and may stratify or demulsify after long-term storage, so stabilizers need to be added.

4. Application fields
Silicone oil:

Lubricant: It is used in machinery, electronic equipment, etc.

Defoamer: used in food, pharmaceutical and other industries.

Cosmetics: used as a lubricating ingredient in skin care products.

Release agent: used in rubber and plastic products.

Silicone emulsion:

Textile treatment: used as a softener and waterproof agent.

Cosmetics: used in lotions, creams, etc.

Paint: used in architectural paints to improve waterproofness.

Agriculture: used as a pesticide adjuvant to improve adhesion.

5. Usage

Silicone oil: can be used directly or diluted.

Silicone emulsion: needs to be diluted with water before use to facilitate uniform dispersion.

6. Environmental impact

Silicone oil: not easy to degrade, may have long-term impact on the environment.

Silicone emulsion: because it contains water, it is relatively more environmentally friendly, but emulsifiers may cause pollution.
