What is silicon defoamer?

Silicone defoamer is a kind of defoamer prepared by a special process with silicone oil and organosilicon compounds as the basic components, combined with suitable solvents, emulsifiers or inorganic fillers. Silicone oil is insoluble to various substances, so it can be used in a wide range of applications, both in water and in oil systems.

Silicone defoamer is a white viscous emulsion, which is a milky white oil-in-water emulsion with a non-volatile content of 26±1%, a pH value of 6-8, good stability (no stratification at 3000 rpm/20 minutes), and non-ionic ionic characteristics.

Silicone Oil Emulsion Defoamer

Silicon defoamer is mainly used in the production process of chemical, papermaking, coating, food, textile, pharmaceutical and other industrial sectors, as an indispensable auxiliary in the production process. It can not only remove the foam on the liquid surface of the process medium in the production process, so as to improve the separation, gasification and discharge effects of filtration, washing, extraction, distillation, evaporation, dehydration, drying and other processes, ensure the capacity of various materials and processing containers, and improve product quality.

 

In addition, silicon defoamers are especially suitable for use in difficult systems such as high temperatures, strong acids, and strong alkalis.

In the case of appropriate dosage, it can meet the requirements of controlling foam throughout the fermentation cycle, and is the best defoamer for the fermentation of strains that are sensitive to the toxicity of bubble enemies.

The advantages of silicon defoamers are as follows:

1. Wide range of applications: Due to the special chemical structure of silicone oil, it is not miscible with water or substances containing polar groups, nor with hydrocarbons or organic matter containing hydrocarbon groups. Due to the insolubility of silicone oil to various substances, it has a wide range of applications, which can be used for both defoaming in water system and oil system.

2. Small surface tension: The surface capacity of silicone oil is generally 20-21 dynes/cm, which is smaller than that of water (72 dynes/cm) and general foaming liquid, and the defoaming effect is good.

3. Good thermal stability: taking the commonly used dimethicone oil as an example, it can withstand 150 °C for a long time and more than 300 °C for a short time, and its Si-O bond does not decompose. This ensures that silicone defoamers can be used over a wide range of temperatures.

4. Good chemical stability: Since the Si-O bond is relatively stable, the chemical stability of silicone oil is very high, and it is difficult to react with other substances. Therefore, silicone defoamers are allowed to be used in systems containing acids, alkalis and salts as long as they are properly formulated.

5. Physiologically inert: Silicone oil has been shown to be non-toxic to humans and animals, with a semi-lethal dose greater than 34 g/kg. Therefore, silicone defoamers (in combination with suitable non-toxic emulsifiers, etc.) can be safely used in food, medical, pharmaceutical and cosmetics industries.

6. Strong defoaming power: Silicone defoamers can not only effectively break the foam that has been generated, but also significantly inhibit the foam and prevent the formation of foam. It is used in very small quantities and only needs to be added as one millionth by weight (1 ppm) of foaming media to produce a defoaming effect. It is commonly used in the range of 1 to 100 ppm. It is not only low cost, but also does not pollute the substances to be defoamed.
