Silicone rubber pacifiers and silicone pacifiers are two common materials in baby products. Although the names are similar and the main ingredients are silicone-based materials, there are differences between the two in material properties, production processes, usage experience and safety.

What are the specific differences? Please see my analysis below:
1. Material and composition
Silicone rubber nipple:
Usually refers to traditional silicone rubber (Silicone Rubber), which is a kind of silicone polymer. Its molecular chain structure is relatively loose, and a small amount of filler (such as silica) may be added to enhance hardness or wear resistance, but the overall elasticity remains high.
Features: moderate softness, good resilience, high temperature resistance (120℃~200℃), but long-term use may cause slight aging or yellowing.
Silicone nipple:
Most of them are made of purer food-grade liquid silicone (LSR, Liquid Silicone Rubber), which is composed of high-purity silica and almost no additives.
Features: finer and softer texture, high transparency, stronger chemical stability, wide temperature resistance range (-40℃~230℃), and better anti-aging performance than silicone rubber.
2. Differences in production processes
Silicone rubber nipples:
Molding or injection molding is relatively simple and the cost is low. There may be trace odors due to additives, which need to be fully ventilated to remove.
Silicone nipples:
Liquid silicone injection molding (LIM technology) is used, which requires precise control of temperature and pressure. The finished product has no pores and a smooth surface. No vulcanizer is required, which is safer.
3. User experience comparison
Softness: Silicone nipples are softer, close to the touch of breast milk, suitable for newborns; silicone rubber nipples are slightly harder, suitable for older babies or those in the teething period.
Durability: Silicone nipples are tear-resistant and not easy to be bitten; silicone rubber nipples may have fine cracks due to oxidation after long-term use.
Cleaning and disinfection: Both are resistant to boiling disinfection, but silicone nipples are more resistant to oil stains and are not easy to leave milk stains.
4. Safety considerations
Certification standards: High-quality silicone pacifiers are usually certified by FDA, LFGB, etc., and do not contain BPA or plasticizers; silicone rubber pacifiers need to be confirmed to meet food grade standards (such as GB4806.11-2016).
Risk warning: Inferior silicone rubber may release trace amounts of volatile substances, while high-purity silicone is almost risk-free.
5. Price and market positioning
Since the cost of raw materials and process is relatively high, the price of silicone pacifiers is usually 20% to 50% higher than that of silicone rubber pacifiers, and they are mostly seen in high-end maternal and child brands; silicone rubber pacifiers are more cost-effective and suitable for daily replacement.
Based on the detailed analysis of the differences above, here is a tip:
No matter which one you choose, you must identify the regular brand, regularly check for signs of aging (such as fogging, deformation), and follow the 3-month replacement principle.
