Fjord Line's MS Bergensfjord ferry first applied Hempaguard silicone antifouling paint from Hempel in January 2025. The product achieves significant energy savings and emissions reductions by reducing the drag of the ship as it glides through the water. For MS Bergensfjord, this means saving up to 21,000 tons of CO2 emissions over six years.
Fjord Line's use of Hempaguard silicone antifouling paint not only helps reduce its environmental impact, but also significantly reduces its operating costs. Silicone antifouling paint also effectively prevents the adhesion of marine organisms, thus avoiding the additional fuel consumption and CO2 emissions caused by fouling organisms, further enhancing its environmental advantages.
When applying Hempaguard, the immediate effect is a 6% fuel saving. When all old coatings are completely removed prior to application, the total fuel saving increases to over 8%. As the coating remains efficient over a six-year period, with only a 1% increase in power demand after six years, we achieve an additional saving of almost 7%. This adds up to a total fuel saving of 15%.
