You may not have heard of low-hydrogen silicone oil, but it has quietly infiltrated our lives-from your waterproof jacket to the chip protection in your phone, it plays a crucial role! Today, let's get to know this hidden gem in the organosilicon family.
Simply put, it's a silicon material with active hydrogen, possessing numerous small bonds that enable chemical reactions.
It features alternating Si-O bonds in its main chain and active Si-H bonds in its side chains, with an adjustable hydrogen content of 0.1%-0.8%! It's not only highly reactive but also resistant to high and low temperatures (stable from -50℃ to 200℃), and it's compatible with a wide variety of materials, boasting excellent compatibility.
Core application areas of low hydrogen content silicone oil
1. Intermediates in Silicone Product Synthesis
This is the most basic application of low-hydrogen silicone oil, a core raw material for preparing other functional silicone products.
Synthetic Modified Silicone Oil: Modified silicone oils, such as long-chain alkyl, fluorinated, and polyether modified silicone oils, are prepared through Si-H bond addition reactions with compounds containing unsaturated bonds (long-chain olefins, fluorinated olefins, etc.), used in cosmetics, coatings, and other fields.
Preparation of Silicone Rubber Crosslinking Agents: In addition-type silicone rubbers (HTV, RTV), addition reactions are conducted with vinyl-containing base compounds to form a three-dimensional network structure. Compared to traditional vulcanization methods, this method has advantages such as lower vulcanization temperature, no byproducts, and stable performance, and is used in the production of sealing rings, medical silicone, etc.
2. Material Surface Modification and Function Enhancement
By reacting with the material surface, new functions are imparted or existing properties are enhanced.
Resin Coating Modification: Added to epoxy resins, polyurethanes, and other coatings, it can improve high and low temperature resistance, weather resistance, corrosion resistance, improve leveling properties, and impart waterproof and anti-fouling functions, suitable for architectural, automotive, and industrial anti-corrosion coatings. 3. Fiber and Fabric Finishing: As a finishing agent, it adheres to the fiber surface through padding and baking, giving the fabric waterproof, soft, wrinkle-resistant, and abrasion-resistant properties without affecting breathability. Suitable for high-end clothing and outdoor waterproof fabrics.
4. Protective Shield for Electronic Products
Provides protection for electronic components, ensuring stable equipment operation.
Electronic Component Encapsulation Materials: As a crosslinking agent, it participates in the curing of encapsulating silicone resin/potting compound, forming a dense structure, providing insulation, resistance to high and low temperature impacts, and anti-aging protection. Suitable for chips, sensors, etc.
Electronic Potting Compound Toughening Agent: While crosslinking, it adjusts the flexibility of the molecular chains, improves the brittleness of the potting compound, enhances impact resistance, and prevents cracking caused by temperature changes or vibration.
5. Other Fields – All-Round Assistant
Mold Release Agent: Used alone or in combination for plastic, rubber, and metal die casting, forming a thin film on the mold surface, providing good release without residue, and extending mold life. Defoamers: Utilizing their low surface tension, defoaming agents are used in coatings, printing and dyeing, and wastewater treatment, providing long-lasting defoaming with minimal impact on system stability.
Cosmetic Raw Materials: Modified low-hydrogen silicone oils (such as polyether-modified ones) can be added to skincare and personal care products as emulsifiers and emollients, forming a moisturizing and smooth protective film.
